Imran Khan Remarks On COAS Appointment Go To Heart Of Military’s Entanglement With Politics

Imran Khan had criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former President Asif Zardari for choosing their own army chief.

Imran Khan Remarks ON COAS Appointment:

It is being said that the army chief of Pakistan should be chosen by a committee, not by any individual. They also say that Imran Khan should not talk about the issue because it is against the constitution.

However, there are many people who support Imran Khan’s views on this issue.

Khan has also said that the current military leadership has no idea how to handle the country’s problems. And he believes that this is because they are not from Pakistan, but rather from neighboring countries.

Khan also said that he would like to see someone who understands Pakistan’s culture and history, as well as its geography, take over as head of the army.

Legal experts say Imran’s remarks have injected new pressure on him to prove that he is not guilty of any wrongdoing, but it may be too late to correct the damage he has caused himself with this statement.

Imran has already been accused by several parties including the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the government of Pakistan.

Some senior official lawyers reminisce the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s condition in the same regard. He had dealt a fatal blow to his legal battles when he made the same mistake of annoying judges and the establishment.

The Supreme Court had ruled that Nawaz Sharif be disqualified from office for not declaring his source of income in the Panama leaks case in July this year. The apex court had also ordered an investigation into the allegations against him.

However, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan’s decision was challenged by Nawaz Sharif’s counsel in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which ruled to dismiss the petition on April 10.

On May 8, an appeal filed by Sharif against Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan’s ruling was also dismissed by an IHC judge.

After these rulings, the former premier has been declared ineligible to hold public office and disqualified from contesting elections due to contempt of court proceedings against him by the Supreme Court over the non-disclosure of assets in his nomination papers for a Senate seat in Punjab in 2013.

The former additional attorney general, Tariq Mahmood Khokhar, has said that Imran Khan has “blundered grievously”.

He has managed to annoy almost everyone who matters most to him. Now he must reap the whirlwind. However, the superior judiciary will not be provoked to deny such reliefs that are strictly on merit.

Mr Khokhar stated that Mr Khan’s conduct was wholly gratuitous, and it was “utterly unpardonable.” He added that Mr Khan had been “caught red-handed in his blatant violation of trust”.

Mr Khokhar concluded by saying that “it is imperative for all those who care about [Mr Khan’s] political role and future prospects that they should cool off and give him some space”.

Imran Khan’s recent statements have made him appear as one who is not ready to rule Pakistan. He has been making all kinds of statements, from criticizing the judiciary to calling for civilian supremacy. However, a section within the legal fraternity believes that Imran Khan was only trying to gain the establishment’s support against rival parties.

Moreover, Imran Khan had made a blunder by filing references against Justice Qazi Faez Isa during his tenure as the majority of judges took it as an attack on the independence of the judiciary.

However, senior lawyers believe that this will not have any political impact on Imran Khan because people do not trust him anymore.

As the country heads towards elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Islamabad High Court against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

As of Tuesday, Islamabad High Court Judge Justice Babar Sattar is also taking up a contempt petition against PTI leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain.

Similarly, several other cases related to PTI are pending in the apex court as well.
